Mental Health And Physiotherapy

Physio and our Mental Health...

Mental Health And Physiotherapy

Fundamental to my physio practice is the understanding that our physical health and mental health are connected in many ways.

When we are emotionally unwell it is common to experience physical pain in the body. Similarly, living with a long term health condition or chronic pain will affect how we think and how we feel. Our physical experience and our emotional experience is intertwined and I believe it is important that both are considered within our work.

When we are healing from mental illness we are told of the benefits of physical activity and of exercise yet there will be times when this is not a possibility for us. It is common to feel disconnected from our bodies and what they need. At some level, we may want to move more but we may feel unsure about what to do. It may even be that we exercise too much or are unable to rest. If we struggle with physical pain at the same time it can feel very difficult to reach out for help. We may have had unhelpful experiences of healthcare or exercise in the past.

How I can help

At Embrace, it is my promise to provide a space where you will be listened to. We will…

  • Work together to understand what you need and how I can help as a physiotherapist
  • Always work at a pace that suits you
  • Work on what is most important to you
  • Work to support you alongside other treatments or therapy you may be receiving

Ready to start?

The process may feel challenging and it does take time but with the right support we each have a huge potential to change and to move beyond our pain experience.
